SANCTIONS AND PUTIN’S WAR MACHINE

For the past year since Russia’s unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United States and its allies have imposed some of the most extensive sanctions and export restrictions in history on Moscow.

Many of these sanctions specifically target Russia’s military industrial complex and are aimed at preventing Vladimir Putin’s war machine from acquiring the microchips, semiconductors, and other technology necessary for modern weapons systems.

So with Putin’s war about to enter its 15th month, what effect are Western sanctions having? What steps is Russia taking to evade them? What countermeasures are the United States and its allies preparing to close the gaps? And what effect will all of this have on the trajectory of the war?

On The Power Vertical Podcast this week, host Brian Whitmore speaks with Max Bergmann and Maria Snegovaya of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington and the co-authors of the recently released report, Out of Stock? Assessing the Impact of Sanctions on Russia’s Defense Industry.
