War, Famine, and Genocide

Ninety years ago this month, the Kremlin launched a genocidal terror-famine, known as the Holodomor, against Ukraine.

As many as 10 million people perished from starvation as a result of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin’s campaign of forcefully requisitioning grain in an effort to collectivize agriculture, subjugate Ukraine, and crush its  independence movement.

And with Russia currently waging what many consider to be a genocidal war against Ukraine, this month’s Holodomor anniversary is taking on an added significance.

How does a Kremlin campaign of genocide in 1932 help us better understand Russia’s genocidal aggression against Ukraine in 2022?

On The Power Vertical this week, host Brian Whitmore unpacks it all with Michael Sawikiw, Executive Vice President and Director of the Ukrainian National Information Service, Vice President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, and President of the US Holodomor Committee; and Marta Baziuk, Executive Director of the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium.

SHOW NOTES

The opening audio clip is from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech on November 21. The translation is as follows:

“There were many threats to the freedom of our people and the very existence of Ukrainians. But the people got through it. And now we have a historic opportunity to defend Ukrainian freedom once and for all. I believe that it will be so.”

The audio opening the second segment is from Zelensky’s speech to the 104th Congress of Mayors and Heads of Municipalities of France on November 22.  The translation is as follows:

“In order to get through this winter and not allow Russia to turn the cold into a tool of terror and subjugation, we need many things – from generators of various capacities to Starlinks. For us, this is not just a matter of equipment. For Ukraine, this is protection against terror.”
