The Diaspora and the War

As war continues to rage in Ukraine’s east and south, another quieter and more subtle battle is playing out in the West: the struggle in North American and European capitals against so-called “Ukraine fatigue.”

As the initial outpouring of support for Ukraine begins to fade and as the war continues to disrupt supply chains, drive up energy costs, and fuel inflation, there is a very real risk that Western politicians and publics will waver and ultimately be reluctant to continue giving Kyiv the support it needs to defend itself. Vladimir Putin is certainly counting on this.

And on the front lines in preventing Ukraine fatigue from setting in is the very large and very well organized Ukrainian diaspora in the West.

On The Power Vertical Podcast this week, host Brian Whitmore speaks with Michael Sawikiw, Executive Vice President and Director of the Ukrainian National Information Service, Vice President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, and President of the US Holodomor Committee; and Marta Dyczok, an Associate Professor of History and Political Science at the University of Western Ontario and CERES Fellow at the University of Toronto.
